Job Seeker Success Survey Results Are Out!
Job Seeker Success Survey Results Are Out! This week the Career Thought Leaders Consortium published the results of a survey, conducted by Susan Whitcomb of TheAcademies.com and Caitlin Williams, PhD of DrCaitlinWilliams.com, entitled Job Seeker Success Survey Results. Todayââ¬â¢s blog will summarize some of the main points of the survey; next week I will publish a story from one of my clients who succeeded in his job search because he did just about everything in this report as he conducted his job search. Three of the main topics covered in the survey were job seekersââ¬â¢ empowering self-talk, empowering actions, and effective job search strategies. These are areas where more is definitely better! Below you will find what worked for job seekers; I invite you to take on these practices and thought patterns if you havenââ¬â¢t already. EMPOWERING / MOTIVATING SELF-TALK ââ¬Å"I can do this!â⬠ââ¬Å"I am perfect for this job!â⬠ââ¬Å"My current situation does not define me!â⬠One of the most important factors in a successful job search is optimistic self-talk. The job search can be a daunting process, and job seekers need their own support to get through it. Telling themselves they are worth it and deserving, that there are positive aspects to their situation even if itââ¬â¢s challenging, and that they are a great fit for the jobs theyââ¬â¢re applying for makes a big difference in mental mindset and ultimately in the results they get! Of course job seekers did have some disempowering self-talk as well, including doubting their abilities and believing they would fail, either because of their own perceived problems or the state of the job market. It is natural to have some negative conversation in our heads, and itââ¬â¢s important to become aware of it, bring it out into the open, and take any action possible to manage it. If you find yourself mired in negative self-talk, consider hiring a coach to help you pivot toward the positive. EMPOWERING / MOTIVATING ACTIONS ââ¬Å"Talking with my coach.â⬠ââ¬Å"After the interview, I kept looking for a job even though I felt like the interview went well.â⬠ââ¬Å"Practice my 1-2 minute success stories that match the companyââ¬â¢s needs.â⬠Even more important than what job seekers said to themselves was what they DID. Of course the two are intimately intertwined, as positive thoughts often breed positive action. Successful job seekers took on the job search with gusto. They prepared thoroughly for each interview. They hired coaches. They focused on finding the best fit for their skills- not just on getting any job. Many leveraged their professional and social networks. A good percentage considered staying healthy and fit to be an essential component of their success. The least empowering job search activities included procrastination, stopping the search altogether, withdrawing from connections, making errors such as showing up late for interviews, and generally focusing on the negative. Again, having a coach on your side to help you turn around any negative job search patterns can be extremely valuable. MOST EFFECTIVE JOB SEARCH ACTIVITY Network, Network, and Network!! A significant 67% of job seekers indicated that networking and communicating with key contacts was their most effective job search activity. Of those who reported their job search took as long or shorter than expected, close to 80% said networking was their most effective activity. Are you getting the point? 20% said working with a coach or improving their skills in other ways, including enhancing their resume and cover letter writing abilities, was key to their success. ENCOURAGING NEWS FOR OLDER JOB SEEKERS Of those in the 56-60 age range responding to the survey, 64% had recently landed a new opportunity! Furthermore, age did not appear to have any relationship to how long it took to find a job. I see this as very encouraging news for this demographic. For more tips for older job seekers, see 17 Tips for Older Job Seekers Follow in the Footsteps of Winners! READ IT AND SHARE! If you are feeling stuck or discouraged in your job search, please take a few minutes to read the entire report Job Seeker Success Survey Results. You will likely learn something about your own mindset- and maybe even get inspired by the people in the survey group. Do you have success stories to share? Iââ¬â¢d love to hear them! And be sure to tune in next week for a story of success from one of The Essay Expertââ¬â¢s clients.

Tense Use in Academic Writing Past, Present and Future
Tense Use in Academic Writing Past, Present and Future Tense Use in Academic Writing: Past, Present and Future While the dreary constraints of physical reality mean that weââ¬â¢re stuck in the present for all practical purposes, in speech or writing we can skip from past to present to future at will. To do this, youââ¬â¢ll need to master the past, present and future tense. These grammatical tenses are useful in all kinds of writing, but here weââ¬â¢ll focus on their use in academic work. What is Grammatical Tense? Before anything else, we need to quickly clarify what we mean by ââ¬Å"grammatical tense.â⬠The main thing you need to know is that the form of the verb in a sentence changes depending on when the action described occurs. As such, by modifying a sentence to adjust the tense, we can change its meaning: Present Tense: Alfred burns the cakes. Past Tense: Alfred burned the cakes. Future Tense: Alfred will burn the cakes. In the first example, the present tense verb ââ¬Å"burnsâ⬠suggests that itââ¬â¢s happening now. The past tense verb ââ¬Å"burnedâ⬠, however, shows that it has already happened. And by adding the helping verb ââ¬Å"will,â⬠we can instead suggest that the action is going to happen in the future. Looks like the dog will eat them anyway. The examples above are the simple forms of each of these tenses. There are many variations on these, however, so itââ¬â¢s worth checking how each form differs in practice. The Past Tense in Academic Writing In an academic paper, you could use the past tense to show that an idea is not widely accepted any more. In the following, for instance, the past tense ââ¬Å"claimedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"has since been disputedâ⬠both signal that the study no longer applies: Cook and Moore (1964) originally claimed that profane language is amusing, although this has since been disputed by many experts. Pete and Dud: Pioneering researchers in the profane. The past tense is also commonly used in academic writing when describing the methods used in an experiment that has already been conducted: The sample was tested using several techniques. Some colleges have specific instructions for how a methodology chapter should be written, though, so make sure to check for rules about tense use in your style guide. The Present Tense in Academic Writing The present tense is dominant in most forms of academic work, since it applies when writing about current events or states of being. This includes describing: Existing facts and theories (e.g., ââ¬Å"Profane language is common among young peopleâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ) The findings of a study (e.g., ââ¬Å"The results demonstrate thatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ) The opinions or claims of other thinkers (e.g., ââ¬Å"Cook and Moore argue thatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ) The present tense is usually correct even when describing a study that happened in the past, as long as the conclusions are still relevant in the present. The Future Tense in Academic Writing The future tense is less common in academic writing, but it still has a couple of important roles. One is in research proposals, since youââ¬â¢ll need to describe your research aims, predictions about results, and the methods you intend to use: This study will examine the role of profane language in comedy. We predict that profane language will be considered hilarious by the majority of respondents. The future tense is also useful when recommending fresh avenues of research or suggesting how the results of a study could be applied: Our study suggests that further research should be conducted into the increasing use of profane language in everyday life. The crucial thing is that the future tense is used when describing something that hasnââ¬â¢t yet happened or that is expected to occur in the future. Think of it as academic fortune telling. Or dont.(Photo: David Shankbone)

Analysis Of Mans Search For Meaning By Viktor Frankl Essay
Analysis Of Mans Search For Meaning By Viktor Frankl - Essay Example Next, Frankl mentions creativity and enjoyment as factors that contribute to the meaningfulness of life. Most people feel their lives to be meaningful when they have opportunities for self-expression. Meaninglessness is sensed, when a person is deprived of the above-mentioned outlets and isn't able to admit meaningfulness of both negative and positive life events, i.e. ââ¬â in a particular case of death camp imprisonment ââ¬â suffering. "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedomsââ¬âto choose oneââ¬â¢s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose oneââ¬â¢s own wayâ⬠. Therefore, inability to admit the fact that even the bitterest situations have to mean, i.e. inability to change one's attitude towards unfavorable circumstances that cannot be changed, is another element of the state of meaninglessness. The third element of the discussed state is demolition of the values that were held by an individual: "Under the inf luence of a world which no longer recognized the value of human life and human dignity, which had robbed man of his will and had made him an object to be exterminated [â⬠¦] the personal ego finally suffered a loss of values". Another element contributing to the state of meaninglessness is a lack of love, for Frankl sees love as a powerful motivator.According to Oakley, ââ¬Å"people who find their own lives meaningless are also suffering, in varying degrees, failure of motivation, anhedonia, and distressâ⬠.

Conducting a Lecture - Essay Example This essay will look at the different forms of methods that are usable in training to ensure both the nursing professionals and the nursing students get all the information that the lecture on genetic disorders is intended to pass on to them (Oermann & Gaberson, 2006) Lecture Presentation Nurses who have been in practise for some times tend to be repellent to new ideas and discoveries in the field of genetic disorders, this is because most of the information that they are being presented with is contradictory to the information that they were taught when they were in school or that they have grown up knowing. This therefore, requires that the method that is to be used to teach the adult nurses be convincing enough to make them change their views relating to the specific disorder. This will require the use of real life cases and a lot of research statistics on the cases in order to convince them to change the views and information that they previously held. In the case of students who are pursuing a degree in nursing, accepting new information is easy, as they did not have any other contradicting view or information previously. Teaching them will require just the new piece of information and the outdated information may be just for history purposes to show the evolution of information on the subject of genetic disorders. ... eport to duty in their station s therefore they require that the methods of presentation be short, in which theory without practical would do perfectly. Bachelor of nursing students, in most cases do not have knowledge or prior experience in dealing with genetic disorders therefore in presenting the information to them, it will require imparting both the theory and practical skills on how to handle genetic disorder cases (Billings & Halstead, 2009). This therefore will require the students to be exposed to a health institution that deals with genetic disorder cases in order to gain practical experience on top of learning theory bit of the disorder. The differences in age between practising nurses and the students will determine the speed in which any of the two groups will grasp information on genetic disorders. Studies have shown that the young people understand faster compared to the older people and in view of this, the way the trainer is to present information to the practising n urses will be through use of methods that will simplify the information for quick understanding. Some of the methods that a trainer may use include use of both print and visual materials that include charts in order to simplify the information for them to understand much faster and with ease. In addition, PowerPoint presentation and real life cases of patients present in the sessions would also help the nurses to understand much easier. In passing the information to bachelor of nursing students whose memory retention capacity is higher to that of the practising nurses, it will be much easier for them to grasp, therefore the methods of passing the information to them should be fast. In addition, the method should ensure that information on genetic disorders that is passed to the students is

Reading Journal - Essay Example The story continues when Lengel, who is the manager at the supermarket, comes and confronts the girls on their dressing at that time. Apart from being a manager, we are told he teaches at Sunday school to mean that he is a man of God. He condemns their dressing and even insists that it is against the policy of the supermarket to dress that way. That kind of dressing was meant for the beach. Because of this confrontation, Sammy sees this as an embarrassment to the women and in the juncture quits his job, and downs his work tools. This gesture is not noticed by any of the women. Lengel tries to persuade Sammy that it was going to be hard for him to without a job but he listens to none of that and walks out of the supermarket.
